One Box - Subscription Management App

One Box is a secure subscription management app that allows users to easily track and manage all their subscriptions across multiple platforms from one centralized location.

Project Overview

Problem:

To develop an efficient and reliable subscription management app that enables users to seamlessly track and manage all their subscriptions from a single, centralized platform.

Goal: Research-led redesign across 12 weeks
My role:

UX designer

Responsibilities:
  • conducting research,

  • Cross functional collaboration,

  • paper and digital wireframing,

  • iterating on designs,

  • making high-fidelity prototype

Design Process

I used the Double Diamond Design Thinking process to guide this project.

User Research

I conducted survey with 13 participants, using the following questions to gather the necessary data.

Research Insights

Key Insights from User Surveys and Pain Points:
1. Over 75% of users list Amazon Prime as their primary subscription, followed by Hotstar (69.2%) and Netflix (61.5%).
2. 61.5% of users forget to renew their subscription plans, resulting in unexpected charges.
3. More than 60% of users manage their subscriptions manually, while 53% prefer in-app notifications for renewal reminders. (Some companies charge subscription fees automatically without notifying users.)
4. Participants expressed challenges in managing and keeping track of multiple subscriptions.
5. More than 69% of users are particularly concerned about data privacy and security features, with user-friendliness being the next priority. Privacy is taken very seriously by users.

Challenges

It is the series of experiences Carlos has as he achieve a specific goal. It was built on the his experience.

Did a secondary research and find out what are some major challenges are there in the existing market about subscription tracking app.

  1. Integration Challenges: Integrating with various platforms and services can be difficult, particularly if the app requires access to private or proprietary APIs.

  2. Security Concerns: Ensuring the app is secure is essential for protecting users' personal and financial information.

  3. User Adoption: It may prove challenging to persuade users to transition to a new app for managing their subscriptions.

  4. Subscription Limitations: Some subscription services may restrict third-party apps from handling renewals or cancellations.

  5. Trust Issues: The app must establish trust with users, especially when managing sensitive personal and financial data.

  6. Pricing Model: A transparent and fair pricing model is crucial for the app to gain user acceptance.

Problem Statement

Many people subscribe to various services, including streaming platforms, shopping websites, and gaming subscriptions, which can lead to financial strain and confusion.

  1. The goal is to develop a user-friendly, efficient, and dependable subscription tracking app that enables users to manage all their subscriptions in one centralized location.

  2. The app should be accessible and easy to understand for users of all demographics, offering accurate and real-time information about subscription details. This will help minimize missed payments and unexpected charges while ensuring transparency and security.

Card Sorting

The series of hand-drawing frames that visually describe and explore a user's experience with a product.

Conducted a card sorting exercise with 5-6 participants to identify potential content requirements and to explore the information architecture for the app.

Information Architecture

Next step: creating the application map. My goal here was to make strategic information architecture decisions that would improve structural flow of the feature.

Wireframe & Sketches

With three distinct problem spaces defined, the design sprint focused on prioritising solutions by retention impact. We worked in close collaboration with the engineering and QA teams in Unity, with weekly playtest cycles to validate each change.

Hi-Fidelity Designs

Usability Testing

Conducted a second round of usability testing, where users expressed high satisfaction with the final design. The prototype was tested with 5-6 participants, focusing on the primary user flows.

Takeways

  1. The design was created with the target user group in mind, though additional testing and research would further enhance its effectiveness. Keeping the feasibility of design features in mind is also essential.

  2. Using a design system was invaluable in maintaining organization and consistency throughout the designs. A key takeaway for me was understanding the importance of font line height relative to the grid system.

  3. Thorough documentation proved essential in organizing research, ensuring consistency, and supporting scalability—elements I find crucial. I'll prioritize this aspect even more in future projects.
